Security Measures
1. DO NOT PUT A "FOR SALE BY OWNER" SIGN ON YOUR PROPERTY. THIS INVITES STRANGERS TO COME TO YOUR DOOR AT ANY TIME AND RELAXES THE NATURAL VIGILANCE OF YOUR NEIGHBOR'S REGARDING STRANGERS BEING ON YOUR PROPERTY.

2. WHETHER YOU USE A SIGN OR NOT, ALERT YOUR NEIGHBORS THAT YOU ARE SELLING YOUR HOME DIRECTLY AND ASK THEM TO BE MORE AWARE OF STRANGE ACTIVITY ON YOUR PROPERTY.

3. IF SOMEONE CALLS ON YOUR ADVERTISEMENT, GET THEIR NAME AND NUMBER AND TELL THEM YOU WILL CALL THEM RIGHT BACK. TRY TO GET AS MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT THE CALLER AS YOU CAN BEFORE GIVING OUT YOUR ADDRESS.

4. REMEMBER, EVEN IF YOU DO NOT PUT ANYTHING EXCEPT YOUR PHONE NUMBER IN YOUR AD, IT IS RELATIVELY SIMPLE TO FIND YOUR ADDRESS IN A CROSS REFERENCE DIRECTORY. EXCEPT "DRIVE-BYS" WHETHER YOU HAVE GIVEN THE ADDRESS OR NOT.

5. NEVER SHOW THE HOME UNLESS THE HUSBAND OR SOME OTHER ADULT MALE IS THERE. IF YOU MUST, BEGIN THE CONVERSATION BY SAYING, "MY HUSBAND WENT TO THE STORE AND WILL BE RIGHT BACK," OR SOME EQUIVALENT.

6. IF YOU HAVE YOUR CHILDREN HOME ALONE AT ANY TIME, MAKE A STRICT RULE THAT THEY ARE NOT TO ADMIT STRANGERS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. ALERT BABY-SITTER TO THE SAME RULE.

7. IF YOUR HOME HAS A BURGLAR ALARM, DO NOT DEMONSTRATE ITS WORKINGS, POWER SOURCE LOCATION OR CUT OFF SWITCHES. BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS TO ANYONE WHO REQUESTS SUCH A DEMONSTRATION.

8. AFTER SHOWING PEOPLE THROUGH YOUR PROPERTY, RECHECK ALL LOCKS ON WINDOWS AND CELLAR ENTRIES.

9. DO NOT GIVE ANY INDICATIONS AS TO WHEN YOUR PROPERTY WILL BE LEFT UNATTENDED. FOR INSTANCE, "WE CAN ONLY SHOW YOU OUR HOME IN THE EVENING, AS WE BOTH WORK" OR "WE'RE GOING AWAY FOR THE WEEKEND".

10. KEEP ALL JEWELRY, CREDIT CARDS, AND OTHER "POCKET-SIZE" VALUABLES HIDDEN. DO NOT WEAR JEWELRY WHILE SHOWING THE HOME THAT WOULD ATTRACT UNUSUAL ATTENTION.

11. WHEN SHOWING YOUR HOME, ACCOMPANY THE PARTY AT ALL TIMES. IF YOU ARE SHOWING TWO OR MORE PARTIES AT THE SAME TIME, KEEP THEM TOGETHER.

12. PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THE LOCATION OF YOUR KEYS. IF ONE IS MISSING, HAVE YOUR LOCKS CHANGES.
